Private Equity - Business Analyst - North America
Who you’ll work with

Private Equity Business Analysts join our offices in locations around the world to work in teams and directly with our clients.

When you join McKinsey as a Private Equity Business Analyst (PE BA), you are joining a firm that will challenge you and invest heavily in your professional development. In this role you will have the opportunity to work on teams and help the best organizations in the world solve some of their most difficult problems. You will also work with a range of experts in the firm, from data scientists to researchers to software and app designers.

McKinsey’s Private Equity practice is the world’s leading advisor to the Private Equity and Principal Investor industry. We work with investors of all types: PE firms, distressed debt/credit investors, real estate, and infrastructure firms, as well as the institutional investors these alternative investment managers serve, including pensions, sovereign wealth funds, family offices, and endowments. We serve these clients across the deal cycle, assisting with deal identification, due diligence, and portfolio company operational improvements, as well as on firm-level topics including strategy, governance, and operations. Our practice is deeply integrated into the global Firm, serving investors in all geographies, including developed, developing, and “frontier” markets.

The PE BA role is a unique opportunity for an early-career professional to gain significant exposure to the Private Equity industry (and to other types of investors more broadly) and to build a broad, deep skill set in financial and business analysis. This role differs from McKinsey’s generalist BA role in its focus: this role focuses on serving investor clients. However, as our clients invest across sectors and types of companies, the role still offers exposure to a wide variety of sectors and functions. PE BAs will be staffed full time to client engagements and will support clients on projects across the entire deal cycle and on firm-level topics, with the majority of work in private equity due diligence in the first year.

What you’ll do

You’ll work in teams of typically 3 – 5 consultants, playing an active role in all aspects of the client engagement.

This includes gathering and analyzing information, formulating and testing hypotheses, and developing and communicating recommendations. You’ll also have the opportunity to present results to client management and implement recommendations in collaboration with client team members.

You’ll gain new skills and build on the strengths you bring to the firm. PE BAs receive exceptional training as well as frequent coaching and mentoring from colleagues on their teams. This support includes a Partner from your local office or practice assigned to you to help guide your career as well as several weeks of formal training in your first two years as a PE BA.

Additionally, you’ll receive guidance and support from your local office in the selection of client projects, helping you to develop your skills and build your network.
We view the PE BA position as the start of a rewarding, challenging, and highly flexible career with McKinsey. During your first few years with the firm, you will serve as a PE BA on multiple client engagements and work with a number of colleagues and investor clients in a range of industry and functional areas.

Following your PE BA tenure, assuming good performance, you will move into a post-graduate school role. Some PE BAs will take advantage of the opportunity to get outside experience through a secondment (externship) with a private sector or social sector client with the firm’s support. Others may choose to pursue graduate school with support from the firm.
