Sustainable Urban Economic Development - Deputy Team Leader - Africa- Nairobi
Who you’ll work with

You’ll work in our Nairobi office as part of our Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) team.

SUED is a donor-funded, 6-year programme whose core objective is to provide sustainable urban economic development in Small and Medium Towns (SMTs) in Kenya. The programme improved urban economic planning at county level, improved sub-national business environment reforms, and established an Urban Investment Advisory Facility (UIAF) to support public-private investment in Infrastructure and high potential value chains across Kenya.

What you’ll do

You will oversee the day-to-day operations as well as the administrative aspects of the project, reporting to the Team Leader.

You’ll work closely with the project team leads to monitor project status and ensure timely execution. You will also provide ongoing coordination support to the respective project teams to ensure consistency and quality assurance of the deliverables, making sure that all the teams are moving in tandem.

Additionally, you will ensure that the financials are effectively managed and monitored and that the project management operations are effectively staffed. You’ll set up processes and systems for daily operations. Together with team leads, you’ll produce inception reports detailing the outcomes of the inception phase with clear recommendations and prioritization of activities.

You’ll coordinate the planning and monitoring of project activities and serve as the link between the respective teams. You’ll ensure effective budget execution and programme monitoring and make certain that any modifications are in line with the project objectives. You’ll also prepare quarterly and annual progress reports.  

  • A relevant Master’s degree such as urban development/economics
  • 8-10 years of experience leading and delivery large urban economic development projects
  • Outstanding records of academic and managerial or professional achievement
  • Exceptional analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills
  • Strong record of leadership in an academic, professional, or extracurricular setting
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to work effectively with people at all levels in an organization
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively – both verbally and in writing – in English and the local office language(s)
  • Willingness to travel
